The Research Network

Picture
Based on the successful work undertaken for the first seminar series in UK, the research network aims to develop further issues and research questions which have emerged from the discussions and presentations therein. It aims to reconcile the global discourse around the creative industries with local and regional development that has specific economic, geographical and institutional contexts across Europe.

The network focus specifically on the different understandings, trends and issues around the development of the creative and cultural industries in different European contexts
. By doing so, it is intended to foster a multi-disciplinary debate among researchers, practitioners and policy makers in the field and to broaden the previous RSA network reaching new audiences and members, particularly those outside the UK.  In particular, the network aims to have a more focused geographical setting (which covers specific areas of Europe and current idiosyncratic aspects of policy and economic frameworks) while also engaging the following key broad research questions:

1. What are the different understandings and perspectives on the creative industries across Europe?  How do they reconcile the notions of the cultural and the economic?

2. How are creative workers and individuals shaping the dynamics of creative production and local development? How do cultural and creative industries share and support the image of cities and localities and their possibility to retain and engage citizens, as well as developing the visitor economy?

3. What role does the concentration of creative and cultural industries plays at different geographical scales and contexts? In particular, how do these concentrations work in small towns and rural contexts versus the more traditional larger city perspectives?

4. What is the role of local and regional policies and policy frameworks and what are the best practices / lessons emerging in different European contexts? Are there any geographical patterns emerging linked to national policy contexts (liberal, interventionist, federal, central states…)?

Topics for this Research Network have emerged in response to dimensions and issues arising from the previous network events  as well as findings from research that the three organisers have been undertaking themselves in the field in the UK and internationally. In order to address them, the network will organise four seminars across Europe (Southern Europe, Eastern Europe, Central Europe and Northern Europe) in partnership with other institutions participating in the network. The current organisers (Roberta Comunian, Caroline Chapain and Nick Clifton) will ensure the continuity of the network management and will work closely with each participant in the organisation of each seminar. By doing so, the network aspires to become a point of reference for the European debate on creative industries and their role in European regions, and by doing so, support the profile of the RSA as a key player in expanding this debate.
